Honolulu gay film festival to unspool this week

HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu's annual film festival honoring gay and lesbian artists and themes is set to open this week.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports (http://bit.ly/18EpF7k ) the 24th Annual Rainbow Film Festival starts Tuesday at the Honolulu Museum of Art and will showcase 18 feature films and nine shorts.

Actor Alex Newell, who plays transgender student Unique on the Fox hit show, "Glee," will appear. Newell has a role in the opening night movie, "Geography Club."

Festival founder Jack Law, a restaurant owner, says the event has come a long way from when it started in 1989.

Law says he screened 13 movies on a projector in his courtyard.

This year, the movies will be spread out over six days in two venues.
