As Senior Vice President of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Dan Mathews advocates for the rights of animals. As an openly gay man, he advocates for the rights of LGBT men and women.
Mathews is well known for heading several campaigns for PETA, including the “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign. Mathews also heads several other campaigns including the promotion of vegan diets, efforts to stop animal testing in countries around the world, and more recently, efforts to stop the slaughter of baby seals and exportation of their fur around the world.
In 2007, Mathews published Committed: A Rabble-Rouser’s Memoir. The book details his experiences when he was young and how they led up to the successful career he made out of his devotion to animals.
“Our hard work is finally paying off. Animal issues are of prime importance,” Mathews said. “We can’t lose sight of that.”
Mathews also advocates for the rights of gay men and women on a daily basis. In a recent trip to North Carolina in May 2012, Mathews and his boyfriend, Jack, publically kissed outside of the North Carolina Republican building to protest the ban of gay marriage.
“We made out right in front of the Sunday church people,” Mathews said. “The photo just kind of went viral.”
Mathew’s advice to the gay community: “You should never be afraid to be who you are and stand up to bigotry.”
