Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience.
Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.
Week 34 (April 19 - April 25)
The topic I want to touch on today is probably going to ruffle a few feathers and get me called a hypocrite, but oh well. As much as I want to fight for the end of AIDS and HIV, I can’t put myself on a platform and tell people what they should. There’s a difference is stating your opinion and blatantly asserting your own agenda into people’s lives. But hey, we see that happening every day in Washington. Unfortunately, the actions I’m speaking of are coming from a lawmaker who happens to have the backing, and the money, of a multimillion-dollar AIDS organization.
California state lawmaker Isadore Hall has introduced legislation, AB 332, which would make condoms mandatory in porn in the entire state. Right now, Measure B requires condoms in porn only if the video is shot in Orange County. The law, that has yet to be enforced, is supposed to funded by the fines imposed on studios that don’t force their performers to use condoms.
Here’s my problem. I believe that by trying to enforce condoms on performers, activists and lawmakers may inadvertently do more harm than good. No one likes to do something they have to. People should be wearing condoms because they want to. How many times in your life did your mother tell you that you couldn’t have or do something? That made you want it even more, right?
Forcing the use of condoms will cut back the need to have performers tested. I’ve said in the past I believe I was placed with a positive model and not told, and I believe that that ultimately led to my infection because of our unsafe sex off camera. I made other stupid choices with other people, but I felt I was safe having sex with this person. Just using a condom would be, in my opinion, an excuse for performers to not be tested.
