Humpys Pizza, a New York Style pizza joint in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, will be celebrating their 8th anniversary on Wednesday, February 18th.
The inception of the establishment was started mainly by a craving. “We walked out of the Alibi after having drinks with friends and craving a slice of pizza,” explained Steve DeJong, owner. “At that time, there were no pizza places nearby that were open late. We thought it would be great to open a fun little pizza place in the community that was also gay friendly.”
And it is very gay friendly indeed. In fact, Steve and the other owner, Dennis Godfrey, are not only business partners but life partners as well. They met in New York, New York and got married in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The two faced a struggle with their pizza shop in 2008 during an economic recession, only a year after they opened. Steve described it as “very tough for us being a new business.”
When asked what he thinks about his restaurant being around for 8 years, Steve replied, “Upon thinking about it, I wish we could make a reality show because even after 8 years there are constant surprises and crazy stuff that happens on a daily basis that in my wildest imagination, I could never make up or could have anticipated.”
In regards to what unique dishes Humpys offers that other pizza places don’t, Steve said, “We offer a wide variety of specialty pizzas by the slice as well as traditional cheese and pepperoni slices that most other pizza places that serve by the slice offer. A few of our specialty pizzas include margherita with fresh tomato and basil, wild mushroom with caramelized onion, chicken bacon and ranch, shrimp scampi with garlic and even mac & cheese pizza. Additionally, we offer some healthy pizza options such as chicken & spinach with sundried tomato, veggie and chicken and broccoli on our honey wheat crust.”
Humpys Pizza also sells jumbo cupcakes in a variety of flavors available individually or in variety combo packs.
