After almost 50 years in the United States, Christina Wan’s family has a long history of cooking up authentic Mandarin food for the folks of South Florida.
While Christina’s restaurant is in Victoria Park, the Wan family has had their restaurants throughout Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Some dedicated guests visit weekly from Hollywood; others have been dining with the Wan’s since Christina was 13 years old. One loyal fan drove from Orlando and back in a day just for a meal at Christina’s – pleading on Foursquare for a restaurant to open up closer to home.
Thankfully, Christina Wan’s Mandarin House in Fort Lauderdale is close to our home. With a warm welcome from Christina herself when you walk in the door, it feels like you’re home. She’ll seat you next to one of the large windows or in a deep booth. There’s also ample seating at the fully stocked bar, featuring imported beers, wines by the glass, and a variety of cocktails.
For an appetizer, munch on the grilled pork lettuce wraps, served with peanuts, fried onions, and a spicy hoisin sauce on top of crispy iceberg lettuce ($10). Or start off with the Hong Kong-inspired shrimp dumpling soup – served with lettuce and fried onions ($8).
For an extra kick, try the Szechwan chicken – a mix of spicy chicken with red and green peppers, green onions and chili peppers ($12). Don’t leave without trying the honey-glazed walnut shrimp – glazed walnuts and giant shrimp with broccoli tossed in.
While the restaurant serves popular dishes like General’s Chicken ($15) and Mongolian Beef ($16), Christina’s also offers low-carb and low-calorie menus, offering a variety of grilled veggies and meats instead of fried.
You’ll notice Christina’s fare isn’t like traditional Chinese take-out. It’s not drowning in sauce or heavily coated in batter. Rather, with her family’s tenure and her eight-years with her own restaurant, she’s proving that “traditional” can be light and filling without making you stuffed. Her South Florida roots combined with her Mandarin background makes the entire experience a worthwhile visit.
The restaurant is open Monday-Saturday for lunch and dinner, while only dinner on Sunday. Christina Wan’s is located in Victoria Park, 664 North Federal Highway
Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33304.
