Nightlife for February 23, 2011
The Countdown Begins
T-minus seven days and counting….no, we’re not counting down to the next shuttle launch, but rather the launch of the biggest event of the season in South Florida, Winter Party Festival.
The main event, a giant beach party on Sunday afternoon, March 6, is legendary, but the festival is more than just a couple of parties. The festival, which begins Wednesday, March 2 and runs through Monday, March 7, benefits the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and a number of local non-profit charities. In addition to parties, the festival includes concerts and cultural events, family—yes, the kind with real, live children—celebrations, and plenty of activities for gay men and women and all our friends, too.
Tickets are still available for nearly all events and they may be purchased at the official welcome center for the festival, the Doubletree Surfcomber hotel, 1717 Collins Ave. And coincidentally, the site for the fabulous afternoon pool parties. For a detailed festival schedule and to purchase tickets, go to WinterParty.com.
In the meantime, there’s plenty to do in South Florida this weekend. Here’s a look at some of the highlights:
Wednesday, Feb. 27
In Miami Beach, Wednesday means it’s College Night at MOVA Lounge, 1625 Michigan Ave. Enjoy $3 Finlandia vodka cocktails all night long as you take in the music of DJ Bryan Zero. And, don’t forget to thank your hosts, Tony Ferro and the Pennyback Boyz.
Thursday, Feb. 26
Can’t wait until the Academy Awards on Sunday? You can get your fill of red carpet diva Joan Rivers (a/k/a Joe Posa) as she dishes at The Wine Cellar. For $19.99, you get dinner and a show, featuring the doyenne of late night talk shows and awards ceremony. The Wine Cellar is located at 199 E. Oakland Park Blvd. in—you guessed it—Oakland Park.
Friday, Feb. 25
The boys at Boardwalk are always hot, but tonight and tomorrow the sizzling Phoenix Saint will take the stage for two shows at 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. sharp. Take in this man’s rippling abs and colorful tattoos at 1721 N. Andrews Ave. in Fort Lauderdale.
Saturday, Feb. 26
Fabulous Provincetown DJ/VJ Chris Racine is escaping the freezing shores of Cape Cod for the sunny beaches of South Florida. He’ll be in the booth tonight at The Manor Complex, 2345 Wilton Drive. Doors open at 10 p.m. and there’s no cover.
Sunday, Feb. 27
You can stay home and watch the Oscars or check out the red carpet at Voo Doo Lounge, 111 SW 2nd Ave. in downtown Fort Lauderdale. “Life’s a Drag” on Sundays and Poizen Ivy, T.P. Lords and Erika Norell, along with a virtual cast of thousands, will be strutting their stuff at one of the most popular T-dances in South Florida.
Monday, Feb. 28
Mojo restaurant, 4140 N. Federal Hwy., already has a reputation for fine food, but on Mondays, you can enjoy a great meal and the music of DJ Maximus 3000. Maximus has long been a local favorite, so you won’t want to miss this special opportunity to wine and dine that special someone.
