New Moon Revolves Around Women in Wilton Manors
The motto at the New Moon Bar in Wilton Manors is, “come as you are” and the mood lives up to it. Conveniently located in the heart of Wilton Drive, the New Moon is where you go to be yourself and meet other people in a casual setting.
The regulars will tell you the atmosphere is pleasant and inviting. Divided between two sections, the main area is more traditional with a large bar, pool room and juke box. Fort Lauderdale’s Terri Heffner likes the diverse mix of people that gravitate to New Moon. “The crowd is usually a little older and it’s fun place to spend time. The bartenders are awesome.” The outside patio is quieter and a better place to make small talk.
Owner Carol Moran says New Moon offers something for everyone. “This can’t be just a dance club,” she tells SFGN. “I want it to be some place comfortable and affordable where women can meet women.”
While most of the nightlife on the Drive is geared towards men, New Moon caters to lesbians, and sticks to motto for everyone, “come as you are.”
Now celebrating 6-years in business, New Moon is a part of living in South Florida. On a recent Thursday night, half a dozen straight 20-somethings comfortably played pool, while a dozen women sat around the bar. Some nights are completely subdued, “think ‘Cheers’ for chicks,” Moran says proudly.
The club is certainly a hot spot for women during big events like Pride and Stonewall.
“What draws me here is that this is a fun, friendly place with great atmosphere,” says filmmaker/producer Angie Sowers. “You have your locals and you always see new faces.” On average, about 500 people a week drop in for a variety of activities.
Each night has a different crowd with a unique vibe and unless there’s a special event, there’s never a cover charge.
Here’s the breakdown:
Happy Hour: Monday- Friday 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m.
Mondays: Martini Madness – the name says it all.
Tuesdays: Karaoke night – we hear some of the participants can actually sing.
Wednesdays: 2-for-1 drink specials.
Thursdays: $3 imported beers; $2 domestic beers and $1well drinks.
Fridays: DJ Rae Rae spins to a packed house. If you love to bust a move or drop it like it’s hot, this is the night for you.
Saturdays: Live music with lots of local bands.
Sports lovers can get their fix with New Moon’s Softball Sundays. A bucket of domestic beer costs $10. Import beer is $18 by the bucket. There’s a crowd from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Carol Moran is the Commissioner of the Women’s division of the Sports Foundation of South Florida. The league is now home to 23 teams and Moran sponsors 11 of them, so it’s no coincidence that softball is celebrated at New Moon.
So if you’re new to South Florida, or just here to visit, walk on into New Moon. Whether you’re there to play pool, meet for drinks or just socialize, this bar has a fun and friendly atmosphere that makes everyone feel at home.
