My HIV Diary: ‘COMPLETED’, Week 19
Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience.
Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.
Week 19 (Jan. 4 – Jan. 10)
I’m actually happy to start off this entry with some good news. I’ve been in this trial for almost 140 days and today is one of the best days I’ve had since I started taking the medication. I feel energetic, happy and alive. I almost forgot what it was like getting up at six in the morning and feeling completely refreshed. I had almost forgotten that six o’clock happened twice a day.
To keep the good vibes rolling, for the first time in a while I logged on to Grindr last night. I was at home writing and all alone. The bottle of white zinfandel and box of Oreos wasn’t cutting it as far as company went. I know, Grindr isn’t the best place to look for company, but it was worth a shot. I didn’t have high expectations. I noticed a profile that had the name “COMPLETED”. When I read the rest of the profile it said he was 24, a biology student from California and had hitched all the way to Florida just to see an alligator. With a profile like that, I had to message him.
I wrote ‘hello,’ put my phone down and waited for a response. When that oh-so-familiar Grindr alert tone went off, I opened it back up to see that “COMPLETED” had replied with one simple question, “Room for a kid to crash on your floor tonight?” I was taken back from his bluntness, but I was intrigued at the same time. I didn’t know if he was serious or not. I replied back that I had a pull out couch. He responded by saying that it would be luxurious.
After exchanging face pictures and assuring him I wasn’t looking for sex, I was off to the Starbucks in Wilton Manors to meet this guy. I arrived to find him sitting in a plush chair with a hiking bag at his side and a journal in his lap. We chatted for a bit with mostly me asking him questions like: “Why the hell would you hitch hike across the country to see an alligator?” His answer was simple, he wanted to see a Florida alligator in the Everglades. He then showed me the stamp in his journal where he had been to the Everglades Park. Now I understand “COMPLETED.”
I thought my life was exciting, but “COMPLETED” has had a much more exciting month than my entire life combined. I’ve been inspired by his exploits and adventures. I want to do something fun and exciting. I want to write more about good things in life. I’m going to have to search hard to find it, but I’m going to do it.
