Gay Men Facing Arrest and Prosecution
Regrettably, gay men facing criminal prosecution dominate the news this week. Arrests are public record, and the news is the news, good or bad.
Many of these are cases we have separately reported on and more information on each case is available by accessing our search engine at www.sfgn.com and entering in the appropriate names. Here is some information on new cases and updates on old ones.
Last week, Denny Hughes, the Da Vinci realtor charged with multiple counts of mortgage fraud and grand theft, continues to assert his innocence of wrongdoing. Last week, he took another continuance of his court date, postponing the case until mid-April. Hughes is now out on bond, but he had previously been held for a year on a violation of probation, denied the opportunity of pre trial release.
One person who may know how Hughes felt is Justin Wyse, a sales manager of the monthly newspaper, the South Florida Chronicle. Booked into the Broward County Jail on charges of Possession of Methamphetamine with intent to deliver, the arrest constitutes a violation of his probation for grand theft, and he is presently incarcerated on a no bond hold. Meanwhile, detectives are searching for his Brazilian born roommate, Lucus DaSalva, implicated in the criminal conspiracy with Wyse, and charged with trafficking in crystal methamphetamines. Released on a bond, he apparently cut off his electronic monitor and absconded.
Meanwhile, former Agenda salesman Rob Kohl is still facing a violation of state probation charges in front of Judge Michael Robinson, not only for grand theft and forging checks, but also for a bizarre kidnapping scheme that led to federal charges for attempting to rob a bank… Just so we are up front, and not outdone, also facing Judge Robinson on a simple possession of methamphetamine charge is a former SFGN correspondent, Jason Shutts. He has pled not guilty, and is being represented by a skilled young attorney, who is a member of the Gay and Lesbian Lawyers’ Network, Gary Farmer.
On a more serious note, we are just past the anniversary of the murder of a Wilton Manors couple, Kevin Powell and Steven Adams. We have not forgotten this brutal killing and neither should you. Their accused murderer, Peter Serge Avsenew, awaits trial in a Broward County Jail, held, obviously, with no bond. Detective Gary Blocker of the Wilton Manors PD is working the case if you have any leads.
Meanwhile, in New Port Richey, Florida, Jason Andrews, a bisexual Chicago DJ with a British accent, whose chiseled jaw and good looks landed him roles in countless gay porn videos, has pled guilty to murder. With his girlfriend du jour, Amanda Logue, he stabbed and bludgeoned ‘Scooter’ Abrahamsen, a 41-year-old tattoo shop owner to death with a sledgehammer, celebrating the murder by hyping the sex they were going to have after the brutal killing with texts back and forth to each other. He will now have a lifetime of male bonding to weigh those choices- his sentence: life in jail.
Speaking of murderous porn stars, world famous Ryan Idol remains in jail in California, pending a request for a new trial, following his conviction last fall for attempted murder and a series of other felony charges against his ‘girlfriend.’ I don’t know, but if you are going to be a gay porn star, do you really need a girlfriend?
Also, Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives remain stymied and need your help in finding new leads on some cold cases, including the brutal September, 2010, murder of a Virginia communications executive, Samuel Del Brocco, whose body was found inside a condo in Pompano Beach. Now no one has been charged, no one is being accused, but surprise, at least one of his former acquaintances was apparently a former nude model and adult video star. Just sayin’…reminds me of the lyrics of that famous Jimmy Soul title, “if you wanna be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife; so from my personal point of view, get an ugly girl to marry you.”
