Florida Senator Bill Nelson Changes Stance, Now Supports Gay Marriage
In a posting on the Tampa Bay Times editorial board, Florida Senator Bill Nelson announced he has changed his view, and now fully supports gay marriage, leaving only six Democrats in the Senate who have yet to do the same.
“I will add my name to the petition of senators asking the Supreme Court to declare the law that prohibits gay marriage unconstitutional,” Nelson wrote.
Nelson would go on to quote Abraham Lincoln and added a simple thought: if God made homosexuals as well as heterosexuals, why should he discriminate against their civil marriage.
“It is generally accepted in American law and U.S. society today ‘… that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness’,” Nelson wrote. “I believe that. The civil rights and responsibilities for one must pertain to all.”
This change comes after Nelson told the Miami Herald that he believed marriage should be left to the states in May of 2012.
