Florida Organization to Tackle LGBT Suicides with Art
The Florida Initiative For Suicide Prevention (FISP) held a kick off party for their “Expressions of Hope” project.
Several organizations are taking part in the project including Inside Out, Theatre Company, SunServe, The Pride Center of Equality Florida and the City of Wilton Manors.
The project will include a series of theater workshops that will foster community dialogue on suicide prevention. The end product will result in a multi-media theater presentation featuring the spoken word, videos, songs and other possible forms of art expression.
“I believe that this project is going to help the community talk about an important issue which is suicide prevention and help each other to not be so fearful when you have these feelings,” said Howard Cohen, a facilitator and speaker for FISP.
“I feel like it’s the “It’s Get Better” project but it’s also about letting people know it just doesn’t get better, it can get better now. We want to help them feel better immediately and help them know they are not alone. We’ll help them feel comfortable sooner. We need to give them some immediacy.”
The theater workshops will be led by Robin Braun, executive artistic director of Inside Out Theatre Company.
The workshop dates include
April 29 – 7 to 9 p.m. at the Pride Center
April 30 – 7 to 9 p.m. at SunServe
May 23 – 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Pride Center
May 30 – 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at SunServe
