(Edge) The National Hockey League says it will investigate a homophobic slur hurled by the Toronto Maple Leafs' Morgan Reilly, reports Sports Illustrated.

The popular player was heard to call a referee a "fucking faggot," multiple news outlets alleged.
The slur was reportedly hurled at a referee during the second period of the Leaf's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 11. The Leafs went down in defeat, 6-2, noted Narcuty.com.
Leafs GM Kyle Dubas issued a statement that was posted at nhl.com that same evening.
"The Club is aware of the reports surrounding a homophobic slur used during the Maple Leafs versus Lightning game on Monday night," Dubas said in the statement. "The issue of homophobia is one the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club strongly condemns and takes very seriously. We are in communication with the NHL and are cooperating fully with their office."
Sports illustrated recalled a 2016 incident in which Andrew Shaw, a forward with the Blackhawks, was in the penalty box when he was heard to utter a homophobic epithet.
At least one Twitter user recalled more than that one incident, posting "a recent history of NHL's inconsistent handlings re: reactions when a player yells a homophobic [insult] on the ice."
