Indonesia officials pledged to stop public flogging in April, but that didn’t stop a gay couple’s public whipping alongside 13 other people in front of a cheering crowd.
The couple was flogged over 80 times by a hooded figure in Indonesia’s Aceh province on Friday, according to ABS-CBN News. Their “crime” was gay sex, which is against local Islamic law. Aceh is the only Indonesian province to enforce this law.
The other people were whipped for crimes including drinking alcohol, selling alcohol, and showing affection publicly.
ABS-CBN News reports about 1,000 people in the audience who took pictures and shouted phrases such as “flog them harder.”
The couple, who were not identified, were the second same-sex couple to be flogged in public this year in the province.
"Hopefully the flogging we're witnessing today will serve as a lesson for people not to violate
sharia (Islamic law)," said Banda Aceh official Tarmizi Yahya.
