The Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Slow Burn Theatre Company and Island City Stage led the pack when the nominations for the 38th annual Carbonell Awards were announced this week.

The Maltz, always a strong competitor known for lavish musicals, captured 19 nominations, the most of any company, for the 2013 productions of Dial M for Murder, Doubt, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Annie.

“Next to Normal,” the first eligible show from Slow Burn Theatre Company, led the musical category with 10 nominations, including Best Director (Patrick Fitzwater), Best Musical Direction (Manny Schvartzman), Best Scenic Design (Sean McClelland) and three acting categories (Matthew Korinko, Clay Cartland and Anne Chamberlain).

“The Timekeepers,” the tale of the plight of two concentration camp prisoners — one Jewish, one gay — produced by Island City Stage in Fort Lauderdale received the most nominations in the play category, six, for Best Production, Best Director (Michael Leeds), Best Actor (Michael McKeever), Best Scenic Design (Michael McClain), Best Lighting Design (Preston Bircher) and Best Sound Design (David Hart).

Palm Beach County theaters earned a total of 62 nominations, followed by Miami-Dade theaters with 28 and Broward County theaters with eight.

The Carbonell Awards, along with New York’s Drama Desk and Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Awards, are among the nation’s most prominent regional theater awards. Named after Manuel Carbonell, the internationally renowned sculptor who designed the original solid bronze and marble award in 1976, the awards are selected each season from eligible professional productions by volunteer panelists and judges.

The 2013 Carbonells will be awarded at a gala ceremony on Monday, March 31 at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $25 in advance at BrowardCenter.org or $35 at the door.
