Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White has come out saying the biggest regret in his 12-year career in the UFC has been using the word “faggot” in a 2009 video blog.
“That's the only thing throughout the 12 years of running the UFC. The way I came off in that thing, people still think I'm some kind of homophobe, and I'm not. That still bothers me,” White told MMA Mania.
White erupted after an anonymous source criticized his management style in a 2009 article on a mixed martial arts website. He called the source in the story “a pussy and a fucking faggot,” for remaining anonymous.
White apologized to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation the very next day, saying he “never intended to hurt the gay community," but he still regrets those words.
Last year, White defended the LGBT community, saying he wished there were openly gay fighters in his MMA competition after a Brazilian fighter said he wouldn’t train with a gay man.
“I could care less if there's a gay fighter in the UFC. There probably is and there's probably more than one. I mean, it's 2012. Give me a break,” he told MMA Mania.
Dakota Cochrane, an MMA fighter competing in this year’s Ultimate Fighter series, the reality TV spin off of the UFC competition, disclosed that he had performed in 16 gay porn videos under the stage name “Danny,” but says he’s not gay.
