What started off as a misunderstood joke culminated with a homophobic slur by NFL linebacker Tank Carder to comedy Twitter account Because I’m a Guy.

“@causewereguys... unfollowed your a faggot for that,” Carder tweeted (the tweet has now been deleted).

That’s when he started to get slammed by other Twitter users, to which he replied:

@craigcraiglife I don't agree with being gay or lesbian at all, but saying faggot doesn't make me a homophobe, it's just a word,” in another tweet that has now been deleted.

The Cleveland Browns were quick to issue a statement distancing themselves from Carder’s remark.

“These comments are certainly not reflective of the Cleveland Browns organization, nor do we condone them in any fashion,” Browns spokesman Neal Gulkis is quoted by CBS as saying.

“We have spoken with Tank and have made this very clear to him.”

According to Outsports, the Major League Soccer puts a penalty of a three-game suspension for using similar language, while the NBA makes players pay up to $50,000.

The gay sports website is asking the NFL to suspend Carder for at least one game for using the slur publicly.

Carder has since apologized for using the offensive word.

Carder was picked in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills and signed with the Browns in September.
