SANDY, Utah (AP) _ Democrats have selected software engineer Brian Wonnacott as their candidate in the 3rd Congressional District.
Wonnacott was unopposed in Saturday's state convention in Salt Lake City. He told the delegates during his speech that he stands for legalizing gay marriage, protecting the state's public lands and getting health care for everybody.
Three-term Republican congressman Jason Chaffetz is trying to fend off two fellow GOP challengers at the Republican Party's nominating convention Saturday: software engineer Robert Stevens and photographer Mark Hedengren.
Chaffetz must win 60 percent of delegate votes on Saturday to avoid a primary battle against the candidate who gets the second-most votes.
The 3rd Congressional District stretches from the southeast suburbs of Salt Lake City to the Arizona and Colorado borders.
