The Key West Citizen, Key West’s largest, oldest and only daily newspaper, endorsed Mitt Romney for President on Sunday and soon thereafter the Key West Gay and Lesbian Community Center expressed its discontent with the decision.
“It is with a heavy heart that we learned that the Key West Citizen, Key West's largest and oldest newspaper, has publicly supported an anti-equality candidate for President of the United States of America and (by association) his equally anti-equality running mate,” the Center sent out in an e-blast.
“It is shameful to imagine how this affected the members of our community—lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and our straight allies—who woke up today only to discover we all had been side-swiped and back-stabbed by our own supposed neighbor and supporter.”
SFGN could not access the editorial online but according to the Center it begins with:
"From time to time in our nation’s history, situations have arisen that require a choice be made by the voters to resolve political impasse. Examples of these occasions include issues such as continental expansion, suffrage, civil rights, continuing war and setting an economic direction. During such times voters have been called upon to make a choice between two equally passionate sides where the result affects the direction and future of the country. This is one of those times."
The Center is now urging members to contact the newspaper:
“Please take a moment to email the editor, editorial board and publisher of Key West Citizen and explain how their lack of good judgment and absence of empathy with Key West and our friends and visitors—by their support for an openly anti-equality presidential candidate—was short-sighted with direct repercussion on children, couples, families, and individuals.
