(EDGE) Conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt went after two high-profile Democrats in one backhanded slurry of sarcastic, if disjointed, compliments in which he bizarrely claimed that freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a "transgendered" Joe Biden, The Daily Beast reported.
Ironically, the jab fell in the middle of a stream-of-consciousness broadside in which Hewitt was essentially critiquing Ocasio-Cortez for what he characterized as her "word salad" style of speaking and slamming former Vice President Joe Biden for saying "outlandish" things.
An audio clip and transcript of Hewitt's comments, which he made on Jan. 22 as part of his "The Hugh Hewitt Show," shows Hewitt taking Ocasio-Cortez to task for likening the growing climate change poses to her generation to the challenges posed by World War II to an earlier generation.
Seizing on that comment and running with it, Hewitt unleashed a barely-comprehensible verbal free-for-all in which he offered up faux plaudits to Ocasio-Cortez's "youthful energy," calling her "unmoved by her inexperience, confident in her lack of knowledge, and completely charismatic."
Hewitt went on to compare the congresswoman's remark to the game "Mad Libs," saying that she was "cutting up" and imagining absurd outcomes to successfully overcoming the hazards that climate change has already presented.
"This is our World War II, you're going to have to have 60 million dead people in five years," Hewitt riffed. "Six years, 60 million people. You're going to have to have the Iron Curtain come down --. I would just love to talk -- oh, I would love to talk to her."
Pivoting toward another Democratic target, Hewitt then revealed an utter incomprehension of transgender people and the issues they face.
"Joe Biden has actually gone through the time machine and transgendered into Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez," he said. "This was Joe Biden -- she's going to fill the Biden gap. The Biden gap concerned me. Someday Joe will leave the public stage and we will not have people who will say outlandish things. But now the Biden gap is filled."
Aside from ignoring the reliable daily tsunami of "outlandish things" that currently emanates from the Oval Office, Hewitt demonstrated a fundamental lack of understanding as to the word "transgender" and its uses. While transgender people can and do transition by way of gender reassignment, such that their physiology is brought into line with their deep-seated and innate sense of their own gender, cisgender people do not, by and large, spontaneously transform from one gender to the other.
Ocasio-Cortez deftly sketched a rigorously on-message riposte, tweeting, "For some reason, GOP seems to think this is a gaffe, but it's actually a generational difference.
"Young people understand that climate change is an existential threat: 3,000 Americans died in Hurricane María."

For his part, Hewitt tendered a strikingly spare apology, tweeting, "Apologies. Bad word choice on a sensitive subject," reported political news outlet The Hill.
