Let’s face it, the gay community is a lot like Baskin-Robbins--31 flavors available in any combination in a cup or cone. Let me explain. Gays, Lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people aren’t homogenous and certainly don’t fit into strict stereotypes. There are the leather and uniform guys, twinks, butch dykes, lipstick Lesbians….you get where I’m going. There are definitely more than 31 flavors going on in the community.
This weekend, one of the fetish flavors takes center stage when Ramrod, South Florida’s popular leather and Levi bar, hosts the 2010 Mr. Fort Lauderdale Rubber contest on Sunday, Oct. 24. There will be some serious contestants at the contest which begins at 10 p.m. Mr. Rubber International 2009, Stephane Donalson, will even be on hand for the local rubber event of the year.
If rubber is your fetish flavor, Fort Lauderdale is the place to be. For the rest of us, here’s a look at some of the week’s highlights in South Florida:
Thursday, Oct. 21
On Miami Beach’s trendy Lincoln Rd., the destination du jour is Score for a little Crème & Sugar. DJ Pride, accompanied by percussionist Pelu R., will be upstairs, while DJ FR8-0 will be spinning at the 1st level bar. There’s no cover and the music will continue well into the morning. Pick up house vodka cocktails for $5 until 1 a.m. Score is located at 727 Lincoln Rd.
Friday, Oct. 22
Living Room, the swanky nightclub on the Las Olas Riverfront celebrates its second anniversary with “7 Deadly Sins.” Which one best describes you: envy, greed, sloth, gluttony, lust, wrath or pride? Chances are you’ll encounter more than one tonight. You’ll find the party at 300 SW 1st Ave. on the upper level.
Saturday, Oct. 23
Miami-area readers have a new destination, The Bay, located at 1601 79th St. Causeway in North Bay Village. For tonight’s grand opening extravaganza the them is “Night of Illusions.” Now, we’re not sure what they mean when they tell us nothing is ever what it appears to be, but we’ll be the judge of that. DJ Twisted Dee will be in the booth for the party, beginning at 10 p.m. and running well into the week hours of the morning.
Sunday, Oct. 24
There are plenty of places serving up cheap Bloody Marys and brunch on Sundays, but Monkey Business has one of the best deals. Enjoy a complimentary omelette as you sip on the best Bloody Mary bartender Dan can mix up. We hear the locals on Andrews Ave. are just “ape” about them.
Monday, Oct. 25
Take in the game tonight at Matty’s on the Drive, 2426 Wilton Dr. in Wilton Manors. Enjoy the game in the Buca room and take advantage of the friendly neighborhood bar’s October special, 99 cent well drinks and drafts between 2 and 6 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 26.
Tuesdays are Funhouse night at Twist, the South Beach institution located at 1057 Washington Ave. DJ Daisy D. spins in the main room but there’s also fun to be had later when Pussila hosts the amateur strip contest in the Bungalow Bar. Don’t forget to order $5 blue Long Island Iced Teas from your favorite bartender, too.
