Come Sail Away…..from the Holiday Madness

If Peter Burke’s monthly gay tea cruise just doesn’t adequately answer your call of the sea, he’s got the solution. Escape all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season this weekend on a gay two-night cruise to the Bahamas aboard the Celebration, sailing out of Palm Beach. The only lines you’ll be fighting will be to the dinner buffet and the front of the stage, where Burke has lined up some of the region’s top performers. Who knows – you might even get your stocking stuffed a little early. The cruise departs Saturday, Dec. 18 and returns Monday morning, Dec. 20, so you can still make it to work. Bon Voyage!

Here’s a look at some of the fun occurring this week across South Florida:

Wednesday, Dec. 15

Christmas is the season of giving (and we’re not talking “gifts that keep on giving”), so stop by Bill’s Filling Station tonight for the popular Wilton Manors bar’s annual holiday toy drive and customer appreciation party. Bring a new, unopened toy for a local, deserving child at Kids in Distress. The party gets started at 5 p.m. with a complimentary buffet served at 7 p.m. and special Christmas shows at 8 and 10 p.m. Bill’s is at 2209 Wilton Dr.

Thursday, Dec. 16

Thursdays are ladies’ nights at MOVA Lounge, just off Miami Beach’s trendy Lincoln Rd. The cool cocktail lounge serves up half price drinks from 11-12 p.m. and DJ Zehno is in the booth dishing out the latest sounds. MOVA is located at 1625 Michigan Ave.

Friday, Dec. 17

Christmas gets kinky tonight at New Moon, 2440 Wilton Dr., when the gender-bending members of Drag It Out present “A Classy, Nasty Christmas Carol.” If you’re not familiar with Drag it Out, it’s the non-profit charitable group that raises money by helping others explore and expand the traditional definitions of gender. Founder Tabatha Mudra recruited “pros” to help girls and guys alike find their inner kings and queens. The show begins at 10 p.m. and there is no cover.

Saturday, Dec. 18

We all love Judy Garland and young singer and actress Ann Marie Olson is uncanny as the gay icon. Olson and her mentor, Jeff Hess, present a Judy Garland in The Holiday Show at Mustang Lounge in Bill’s Filling Station tonight at 8 p.m. Jeff, who is an instructor at New World School of the Arts by day, will be at the piano playing Christmas favorites starting at 6 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 19

Boys are taking it off tonight at the South Beach stalwart, Twist, Pussilla is the mistress of ceremonies for the weekly amateur strip contest and DJ Paulie is in the booth. Which hotties will take to the stage to take home the coveted $100 prize? Find out at 1057 Washington Ave. There’s never a cover at Twist.

Monday, Dec. 20

The Poverello Center’s founder, Father Bill, needs a new car and the boys at Johnny’s are stepping up with an extravaganza gala fundraiser tonight. In addition to the exciting performances by the dancers at Johnny’s, there will be plenty of opportunities to support the mission of Poverello, which provides food and services to local residents living with HIV/AIDS. The party gets started at 8 p.m. at 1116 W. Broward Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.

Tuesday, Dec. 21

Martini Tuesdays, the monthly South Beach cocktail party hosted by Edison Farrow, returns tonight with an official after party following a special preview screening of Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor’s gay prison love story, “I Love You, Phillip Morris.” We caught a press preview and think you’re gonna love this one!
