Summer is here, and with it, the heat, humidity, and threat of hurricanes gets greater by the week. Also, for those of us who choose to stay in South Florida, sometimes it becomes hard to find good events to attend.
One event that happens every summer is A Celebration of Friends. This is a get-together of mature gay men and their admirers from all over the world. They come to South Florida for a weekend of socializing and having fun poolside.
The event also raises money for local charity. Last year, they raised $10,000 for Tuesday’s Angels and the Pride Center at Equality Park.
To give you an idea of what kind of event this is, the average age of roughly 700 men who attended last year was 60. The youngest being 21, and the oldest 91 years old! In all, about a dozen countries were represented.
This is one of the largest events for mature men in the country, now in its tenth year. The events begin June 22 with early registration at the Fort Lauderdale Airport Hilton. From 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. the gentlemen will be at Tropics on Wilton Drive, enjoying 2-4-1 cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.
“Not only is this our 10th anniversary, this is also the year we get going on our second agenda to start with our plans to build or acquire a low-cost retirement center for the members of the A Celebration of Friends!” states Tom "Tomcat" Pence, president of the organization.
The next day, Thursday, June 23 the events hosted at the Fort Lauderdale Airport Hilton begin in earnest. Vendors, karaoke, cocktail hours, dancing, and a pool party with bingo are a few of the highlights.
There are special room rates for those who want to stay in the host hotel. However, those interested in only attending the events and parties purchase tickets for all of the festivities. If you haven’t purchased already, don’t worry – you can purchase them at the door for $75.
