A Southern Illinois University hurdler penned an open letter to talk about coming out.
Before this year, H. David Rials had not come out to his teammates, according to Outsports. Rials said he was inspired to come out publicly because he saw other athletes expressing their sexuality on Instagram.
“There was no specific reasoning to me hiding it,” he wrote. “I just felt that everything would change but when I did come out, nothing changed, it just got better.”
Rials is currently a junior at the university and runs both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles events.
