A recent survey reveals a large chunk of Latinx millennials are open about being LGBT.
The survey, “Millennial Attitudes on LGBT Issues: Race, Identity, and Experience,” discovered 22 percent of Latinx people between the ages of 18 and 34 identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender — but also 14 percent of millennials overall shared those identities.
Breaking it down, 14 percent of black; 13 percent of white and 9 percent of Asian millennials also identified as LGBT.
“We were excited that the differences emerged. Often millenials are talked about as a monolithic or homogeneous group where everyone is more or less the same,” postdoctoral researcher Vlad Medenica told NBC News. Medenica worked on the study.
Locally, Herb Sosa of Unity Coalition expressed welcoming to the survey results.
“One of the aims of our survey is to dig a bit deeper and see how race and ethnicity shape people’s experiences. The fact that Latinx millennials are least likely to identify as straight is a reflection of how important exploring this difference is.”
