Looking to get noticed in the LGBT scene? Are you a fan of Southern California culture, the beach or a good parade? If the answer is “yes” to these questions then give Long Beach Pride a try.
This year is the 36th edition of Pride for this suburban Los Angeles beach community. It returns May 19. The lineup is led by grand parade marshal Kate Linder. Linder has been a star on the CBS soap opera “Young and the Restless” for 37 years.
This year’s slogan is “A Million Moments of Pride” and for those savvy travelers here are a few tips on the destination:
Politics: Long Beach is run by gay Mayor Robert Garcia, an educator and first-generation immigrant from Peru. Garcia has already declared his support for U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris of California in the Democratic Party’s presidential primary.
Food: Boathouse on the Bay and Tantalum offer surf ‘n’ turf paradise and for local soul check out Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘n’ Waffles near East Broadway & Alamitos. For vegans, James Republic, 500 E. 1st Street, offers a great grilled asparagus this time of year.
In Long Beach, Pride festivities kick off a summer season of LGBT celebrations echoing around the country. Long Beach Pride declares its mission is “to engage and support bridge building activities that educate, encourage and celebrate LGBT inclusion and pride.”
Long Beach Pride is also known to launch entertainment careers. In 2018, country music singer Brandon Stansell attended festivities and performed for VIPs on a crowded patio of the Marriott Renaissance on Ocean Boulevard. Stansell is gay and in his music video “Hometown,” he performs a scene many can identify with – coming out to your mother.
“I don’t want my son to be called a queer! I don’t want him to be queer!” the mother says into a telephone as Stansell painfully listens to the conversation. Rolling Stone named “Hometown” one of the 10 best country music videos of 2018.
For more on Stansell, check out this year’s Concert for Love & Acceptance, June 6, in Nashville, Tennessee. The concert is produced by GLAAD and Ty Herndon at the Wildhorse Saloon.
