Murders have often come from the hands of people under the influence of hard drugs. Sid killed Nancy on heroin. Famed Party Monster Michael Alig killed his roommate under the influence – or withdrawl from – popular 1990s club drugs. However, nothing as illegal seems to be the cause of a recent murder in North Carolina.
A 19-year-old man named Michael Anderson called 911 early Monday morning and told operators he had shot and mutilated his roommate.
“I took some pills and, um, the pills made me go mad and I murdered my roommate,” Anderson is recorded telling 911 dispatchers. “I shot him three times and then I used an axe and mutilated his body.”
The victim, Stephen Starr, was shot several times with both a handgun and a shotgun. In addition to being mutilated by the ax words were carved into Starr’s flesh. Some words were made with a knife, others with what officer’s believe to be a ballpoint pen. Catawba County Sheriff Roy Reid claims it was one of the worst scenes he has encountered in 30 years of law enforcement.
According to Anderson he was very sorry for the killing and said he loved Stephen Starr “as a friend.” Neighbors revealed that while Starr called the doublewide trailer home for eight years Anderson is a new addition. A neighbor of Starr’s said he had only just met Anderson over the weekend.
According to Anderson he expressed interest in “bisexuality,” and soon after he met Starr he moved in with the man.
“I was straight and I wanted to go bisexual just to experiment and I went to a gay club and I met him and I went to his house,” Anderson said on the 911 call. Soon after moving in, however, it seems as if Anderson lost interest in experimenting sexually with Starr. “…I turned straight again and he wanted to touch me and stuff and I wouldn’t let him and he kept trying and I waited until he went to sleep and then I shot him three times and then mutilated him very badly.”
Anderson also told police that they did not have a fight, which sparked the violence. In addition to taking the over-the-counter drug Mucinex he told officers that he has been prescribed medication for ADHD in the past. Investigators spent most of Monday looking for clues as to motive. A computer has been removed from the home to be examined by investigators.
