A gay man in Texas who served in the U.S. Armed Forces became the first openly gay mayor in the town.

The town of Del Rio, Texas elected Bruno Lozano by a 62 percent vote over incumbent Robert Garza, according to PinkNews. He is also the youngest mayor in the town’s history at 35 years old.

“The Baby Boomers have been running the government over the last 20 to 30 years,” Lozano said to Into. “Del Rio needs investment and infrastructure, flood prevention and then they also need economic growth.”

Lozano, who wore high heels in a veterans parade last year, had served as a security forces patrolman and later had to tell LGBT people they would have to be discharged under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. He said that was part of the reason why he did not reenlist.

“I am not ashamed of who I am, so I chose not to reenlist,” he said. “I kept going. I moved on with my life.”

Lozano had never held office before winning this position.
