The former director of a gay community center in the Bronx was sentenced to at least two years in prison for embezzling $338,000 from the organization.
“I’m so sorry to all the people that I hurt,” Lisa Winters said in court on April 1, the New York Post reports. “I’m so sorry for all the harm I caused.”
On Feb. 14, Winters pleaded guilty to second-degree larceny for spending about one third of a million dollars from the Bronx Community Pride Center on personal expenses.
Last year, investigators found that she had used the center’s funds to pay $25,751.74 to Eyes on Africa for a personal trip and $15,953 to a dog-walker. She also paid thousands of dollars for trips to the United Kingdom, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Carolinas, according the New York Daily News.
Winters had served as the executive director of the Bronx Community Pride Center since 2004 until she was fired in 2010.
After the incident, the center’s board tried to cut down costs and find donors, but the they had developed a bad reputation and was forced to shut down, according to Antonio Centeno Jr., the board chairman after Winters was fired. Sergio N. Candido
