Four months after being shot during a Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, Rep. Steve Scalise will give a speech to the Family Resource Center, a group against gay marriage rights. This comes despite the fact that a lesbian police officer tried to protect him after the shooting.
Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner was assigned to protect the practice when shots rang out and injured Scalise and three other people. According to Pink News, Griner was struck in the ankle by a bullet as she pursued shooter, 66-year old James T. Hodgkinson, and later shot him.
Griner was later awarded a Medal of Valor, the highest honor possible for public safety officers, for her efforts. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the FRC is classified as an anti-LGBT hate group.
