As if being the number one pick in the 2013 WNBA draft wasn’t enough, Brittney Griner has now become the first openly gay athlete to be signed by sneaker supergiant Nike. Griner came out in an interview with Sports Illustrated the day after the draft.

Griner’s agent, Lindsay Kagawa, confirmed the deal with USA Today describing the deal as “big time” according to the Huffington Post.

According to Gay Star News, gay basketball executive Rick Welts said Nike first approached him two years ago with the desire to endorse a gay athlete. Nike has taken major steps forward in embracing gay athletes in professional sports. Last year, Nike hosted a first of its kind LGBT sports summit at their headquarters in Portland, Oregon.
