The new owners of Tropics Piano Bar and Restaurant have announced that they plan to reopen the 25-year-old establishment by Dec. 27.
“That’s great news . . . A belated Christmas present to the community!” wrote Fort Lauderdale resident Larry Scholl on Facebook.
The restaurant, which closed in July, had been owned by Jackson Padgett at the time it shuttered its doors. Now, former owners Alex Meyer and Godfrey Thompson, who sold it to Padgett but kept ownership of the building, have taken over again.
Meyer said opening on the 27 will be dependent on the state responding to his request for tobacco and liquor licenses.
Meyer said he and Thompson had a choice: reopen Tropics or do something else.
“We believe Tropics is very important for the community. That’s why we decided to reopen it. It’s [going to be] the old Tropics with a twist. I don’t want to say much about it because people need to come in and see it,” he said, adding that the quality of the restaurant would be better than it was before.
