A man stabbed his partner in both eyes with a pen, shoved a piece of wood down his throat and beat him with a dresser drawer.
Tampa stripper Justin Calhoun was arrested by Key West Police Monday and charged with attempted second-degree murder of 67-year-old Mark Brann, according to a police report.
Brann was flown to a Miami hospital and is in critical condition in what police called “a brutal domestic-related attack,” according to the Miami Herald.
The two men had been in a sexual relationship, 24-year-old Calhoun said in the report.
He claimed to believe his partner was a cannibal — an accusation that started the attack. Brann allegedly became angry and picked up a gun from their bed. The weapon went off as they struggled for control. According to police, no one was shot.
Calhoun then tried to shoot Brann, but the gun jammed. When that failed, he took a pen and stabbed his partner’s eyes.
“Calhoun then inserted a piece of broken wood into Brann’s mouth, stood up, and then stomped on the piece of wood to lodge it further down into Brann’s throat,” the arrest affidavit said. Calhoun claimed to shove the wood down his throat to stop his yelling for help.
The wood piece came from a broken dresser. Calhoun then took a drawer from the rest of the dresser and beat Brann’s head and throat.
“Calhoun admitted he went beyond self-defense,” Detective Jeffrey Dean said according to the Miami Herald.
Brann’s roommate reportedly attempted to unsuccessfully enter the locked room when Calhoun jumped out of the window while nude. He took with him his backpack and money.
Calhoun avoided police for several hours by jumping fences and climbing on rooftops before finally getting caught. He remains in jail Tuesday without bond.
