South Florida’s PBS affiliate will honor the 30th anniversary of the election of Richard Heyman, the first openly gay mayor in the U.S., by airing a documentary on his life.

Directed by Emmy Award-winning journalist John Mikytuck, “The Newcomer” is a 2010 documentary focusing on the life of Heyman, how he made Key West into a gay mecca, and the demise of the LGBT community on the island due to the AIDS epidemic in 1980’s.

Heyman made a fortune on Key West in the early 70’s, when he bought properties on the island and helped to market it as a gay tourism destination. He then made a successful bid for mayor in 1983, becoming the first openly gay mayor in the country.

He died of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1994.

WPBT2 will air “The Newcomer” on Monday, January 14 at 9:00 p.m.
