LGBT Veterans Invited to March in Lake Worth Veterans Day Parade 2013

On Saturday, November 9, 2013, the City of Lake Worth honors veterans with the annual Lake Worth Veterans Day Parade.

According to the City of Lake Worth website, the parade commences its route at the corner of Lucerne and Federal Highway at 11 a.m. A reception is scheduled from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. at the Cultural Plaza, 414 Lake Avenue.

The LGBT contingent of the parade is sponsored by BLAST (Bi, Lesbian and Straight Together) Women of the Palm Beaches and the local Veterans Administration (VA).

“You do not need to be a veteran to participate in this parade—the more the merrier when it comes to honoring our veterans,” said BLAST organizer Toni Armstrong Jr. via an email interview with SFGN.  “It's free to march, and…we welcome everyone who would like to march with us.”

Armstrong explained how BLAST became involved with the event.

“BLAST has over 1,300 members, several of whom are veterans,” she said.  “For the past few years, BLAST has sponsored its own annual BLAST Salute to Veterans. When BLAST leader Mary Chase got hired by the VA to specialize in LGBT issues, it was a natural fit for the two groups to collaborate on finally establishing an official LGBT contingent in the Lake Worth parade.”

She also noted that “it was especially exciting to celebrate the overturning of the discriminatory Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy that had caused so much harm to so many service people.”

According to Armstrong, last year’s LGBT contingent “was comprised of a wide variety of ages, genders, and backgrounds—lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender veterans, family members of people who are actively serving now, and friends of veterans.”

For LGBT veterans who would like to join in this year’s parade, military gear is “encouraged but not required.”  Everyone who marches can carry handmade signs and banners.

Armstrong confirmed that no preregistration is required for the LGBT contingent.  However, the BLAST website indicates that the line-up for participants is at 10 a.m.

“Look for the red Miata and the rainbow flags,” said Armstrong.

Updated information will be provided at the BLAST website as the date for the parade gets closer.
