During a service appointment at Gunther Volkswagen in Fort Lauderdale on Monday, Joseph Wilson said he saw and heard things he didn’t expect – “Josh is a fag” written next to his car and some of Gunther’s employees using the word “queer.” Wilson contacted SFGN about the incident.
“I was kind of embarrassed because I am gay,” said Wilson, who lives in Wilton Manors. Wilson said the incident happened around 11 a.m. and he contacted the company when he got home about 30 minutes later. “I paid and got out of there real quick. I was kind of nervous. I didn’t make a fuss there. I just wanted to pay and get out.”
Asked if he thinks the epithet was an isolated incident or if it was something influenced by the company, Wilson said he didn’t know. “I have not a clue. I’ve never been in that area before.”
Asked if he would go back to Gunther, “I would probably switch to another company. I don’t want to see that word.”
On Monday afternoon, SFGN spoke with a manager at the dealership. He expressed shock over the incident but did not provide an official statement.
By press time Tuesday afternoon, the dealership had not provided a statement to SFGN.
In an interview Monday afternoon, Wilson said he was contacted by the dealership and was told that “Josh is a fag” was written by employees who had previously been fired and were not working at the dealership at the time of his service appointment. He said he did not believe the explanation.
