(WB) A gay couple who was originally from Cuba is among the six people who died on March 15 when a pedestrian bridge collapsed onto a Miami thoroughfare.

The Miami Herald reported Osvaldo “Ozzy” González, 57, and his partner of 21 years, Alberto Arias, 54, were driving under the bridge over Tamiami Trail near Florida International University when it collapsed. Police confirmed the men’s identity after their white Chevy truck was pulled from the debris.

The Miami Herald reported González was from Camajuaní, a town in Cuba’s Villa Clara Province that is roughly 180 miles southeast of Havana.

González was among the more than 100,000 Cubans — “marielitos” in Spanish — who arrived in the U.S. during the 1980 Mariel boatlift. The Miami Herald reported González helped Arias leave Cuba.

González and Arias founded a party rental business in 2000.

The Miami Herald reported the two men were helping Arias’ elderly mother move into their home in the Miami suburb of Kendall when they were killed. González and Arias on Wednesday were buried next to each other.

The men’s families are planning to file a wrongful death lawsuit.
