She had been in Denmark receiving the first sex reassignment surgery by Dr. Christian Hamburger.

Del Martin and Phyllis Lyons Moved In Together. — Feb. 14, 1953

The couple met in 1950, got together in 1952, and on this date got an apartment on Castro Street in San Francisco. Martin and Lyons were the founders and leaders of the Daughters of Bilitis and made many other historical contributions to the LGBTQ rights movement.

Henry James uses the term in The Bostonians, a novel which involves a long-term co-habiting relationship between two unmarried women.

Emo Killings in Iraq Begin.Feb. 17, 2012

The series of killings targets young men who appear outside of the mainstream, especially gay and "emo" youth. Emo is a style often marked by fashions like skinny jeans. On this day Saif Raad Asmar Abboudi, 20, was beaten to death with a brick.

Entry in Henry David Thoreau's Journal about Same-Sex Love. — Feb. 18, 1940

Thoreau that "all romance is grounded on friendship." This is only one of many references in his writings to love and friendship between men.
