In a new interview with The Telegraph, Russell Tovey - best known for his role on HBO's "Looking" - defended straight actor Jack Whitehall, who made headlines this year after it was revealed he'll be playing the first openly gay character in a Disney film.
The debate as to whether or not straight actors should play gay characters has been ongoing but Tovey, who is gay, weighed in last week, defending Whitehall's role on the upcoming Disney action-adventure film "Jungle Cruise," which also stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Emily Blunt.
"If you're an actor, you're an actor," Tovey told the newspaper. "The whole thing with Jack playing a gay character... I'm like, just let him act. It's like me saying I could never play a straight character because I am not going to know a straight person's thoughts."
He added: "I've always been out, and happy with the range of characters I've been offered. I've had the most amazing opportunities."
