For those of us that live here year round, we are reminded of “season,” when snowbirds dust off their wings and flock to town; old friends appear and tourists abound while events and venues brim with excitement.
But with all of the fabulousness that is winter in South Florida, spring and summer should be a time for slowing the pace a little and taking the time to really soak up what our backyard has to offer. It is our delight to keep an eye on the current list of things to do (as is our job and pleasure) and where to go for the visiting public.
So, we humbly suggest that, with a little more breathing room in our schedules, exploring these options can become a pastime filled with great rewards. Shops are more appreciative, restaurants and bars, a little less frenetic that allow for room to relax and truly enjoy. Among the folks who stop in at the Visitor Center, there are a surprising number of locals looking to learn about new cultural events on the scene and ways to meet new people. For a few months now, the LGBT Visitor Center has been hosting a weekly event called Friday’s Cocktail Mixer, where every Friday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., we celebrate the start of the weekend and invite hotel guests in town as well as locals alike who have made it part of the weekly routine. Afterward, we encourage guests to support a rotating list of events and venues, from hotel bars, to museums and festivals. We invite you to join us next time you find yourself in South Beach on a Friday late afternoon.
Looking forward to May in particular, the 13th Annual Aqua Girl weekend (aquagirl.org) will be kicking off with two great VIP events; the first in Fort Lauderdale at a lovely private waterfront home on May 11, then in the middle of AG13 is the VIP event on Miami Beach at the iconic 1111 Lincoln Road building on May 17. In between are lots of events that we are sure you will enjoy. The LGBT Visitor Center is proud to be the official Miami Beach ticket outlet for the event. In Fort Lauderdale, you can get your tickets at New Moon on Wilton Drive.
Over the Memorial Day weekend, Sizzle Miami will be in town, and www.sizzleevents.com will have all the info you’ll need for this sexy gathering of men from all over the country as they descend upon Miami for the weekend. And with that we leave you with the hope that you’ll get out and enjoy your own backyard these upcoming months, support local business and rekindle your sense of adventure and exploration.
We’ll be here for you if you need a map. Safe travels.
The Visitor Center is funded and operated by the MDGLCC Foundation, Inc., the non-profit arm of the Miami Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Stop by the Visitor Center and pick up publications, event flyers, visitor and tourist information and much more!
