Gay Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy will attend an event led by the Democrats after boycotting President Donald Trump’s invitation to an event for U.S. Winter Games athletes.
Kenworthy will serve at the 19th edition of the Democratic National Committee’s LGBTQ Ball on June 25, according to PinkNews. Gay figure skater Adam Ripon will also skip the Trump ceremony, along with Lindsey Vonn, Erin Hamlin, Chloe Kim, Jessie Diggins and David Wise.
“I couldn’t be more excited to join the DNC at their LGBTQ Gala this Pride season,” Kenworthy said. “Over the last year, the Trump-Pence administration has pushed our community to the sidelines, attacking us for who we are and who we love.”
The event will serve as a kickoff for the Democrats to win more seats, as many donors and fundraisers will be in attendance.
“The 2017 elections were a landmark moment for the LGBTQ community,” DNC chairperson Tom Perez said. “Not only did we elect the first openly transgender state legislator, but LGBTQ candidates broke barriers from Palm Springs and Seattle to Minneapolis and New York.”
Kenworthy said that he was told that the U.S. Olympic Committee had received the most rejected invites that they have ever had.
